Individual/Family Plans vs. Group/Business Plans

When shopping for health insurance there are a few key points to consider. Individual plans are medically underwritten and most do not include maternity. As a rule, if you can qualify medically and you do not need maternity coverage, an individual plan will be more cost effective than a guarantee issue group plan. This scenario would most often apply when a self employed person is comparing a group plan to an individual. A common misconception is that group plans are less expensive, but excluding these two areas that is usually not the case. Another common example would be when an employer is contributing to an employee's benefit but not spouse or dependant(s) to an individual plan. Again, excluding maternity needs or inability to qualify medically.
